It seems that many people have the habit of running the air conditioner all day and all nightlong. I know I used to be one of those people. The thing is though, a little fresh air never hurt anyone and you certainly do not want to open your electric bill and find that you owe eight hundred dollars. Trust me, it can happen. When you are home during the day and it is hot outside, make sure that you are running your air conditioner.

However, when you are not home, it is not necessary to have it on all day because you are simply wasting energy. Of course, those with animals in the home have a concern so at least turn the air conditioner down to a lower setting while you are away instead of turning it completely off.

During the nights, if the outside air is cooler than the inside air, turn off the air conditioners and open a few doors and windows and run some fans. This will allow the cooler outside air to come in to cool the home. This is much more energy efficient than continuing to use the air conditioner throughout the night.

Also, be sure that you are not always running an air conditioner where there are no people in the house. For example, there really is no reason to run an air conditioner on full blast all day and all night in a guest room that no one is ever in. That is simply a waste.

Some people find that they cannot get to sleep at night during the summer unless their room is ice cold. Which is somewhat funny since some of these same people insist on being nice and warm during the winter. Anyways, it is important to make sure that you are not over doing it when it comes to sleeping with an air conditioner on at night. Fresh air is always best but if you cannot sleep with your window open for safety concerns or fears than go ahead and stick with the air conditioner. Just make sure that the room does not get too cold though.

You would be surprised how many people will end up with a cold in the middle of a hot summer because they slept in a room that got below forty degrees. In order to make sure that the room does not get too cold, you might want to look into a temperature controlled air conditioner.

There are window units that allow you to punch in the exact temperature that you want and then the unit will shut off when it gets to that temperature instead of continuing to make the room colder. As the room heats up some, the air conditioner will kick back on in order to get the temperature back to your desired setting.

These window air conditioner units usually cost a little bit more but not by much. If you want to make sure that you have a comfortable night of sleep without freezing to death, these are the air units to go for.

For those who are going to attempt to install their own air conditioner, it is important to make sure that you are thinking a few things through before you jump right in. You want to learn from my lesson and never try to do this alone, even if the air conditioner seems light enough.

This is because lifting the window, getting the air conditioner in, and angling it the right way while closing the window can be a little more difficult than meets the eye. This is not to say that you are unable to do it on your own, but it would just be easier if you had someone there with you, especially if an accident happens.

When you are installing an air conditioner, you want to make sure that it remains leaning back a little once you close the window on it. This is to ensure that the water will drain out of the back of the air conditioner instead of sitting in it and then overflowing into your house and behind your walls. With this said, it is vital to make sure that you are double checking where the drain hole is and whether or not it is plugged before you go trying to get the air conditioner in place. I found it to be much easier this way.

Once you have the air conditioner unit in place, pull out a level and check to make sure that it is leaning back some. It does not have to be a major slope but just enough so that the water would naturally roll to the back of the air conditioner. Once you have done all of this, you are ready to turn on and enjoy your new air conditioner.

Depending on the size of the room that you are trying to cool off, you may need more than one window air conditioner in your household. For bedrooms and standard sized rooms, this is typically not a problem. Of course, it is still important to make sure that you are getting the correct size of air conditioner in order to properly cool down the room and not have the air conditioner working too hard.

For homes that have an extremely large living room or an open floor plan for the living room, kitchen and dining room, more than one window unit may be needed. What you will want to do is to measure the square footage of the area.

Even though you may not be able to get an air conditioner for that particular square footage, you can get a couple of smaller ones that when added together can handle that large of a space. You will simply have to put a little thought into it.

As you start to figure everything out, you may find that not each air conditioner has to be of the same size. If every single window ends up with an air conditioner unit in it, it may be time to think about upgrading into a central air unit.

Not only will the central air unit provide the right amount of cool air for you in your room, but also it will have a much nicer look than ten air conditioners hanging out of your windows.

Many people start searching for an air conditioner online or in the local stores to purchase once spring hits. Some people wait until the summer months simply because they forgot or they had to wait to be able to afford it. No matter when you are purchasing your air conditioner, you want to make sure that you are trying to get the very best deal possible. There simply is no reason to spend more than you have to so do your best to make sure that you are not paying full price. Search the internet or watch the promotions in the TV to get the best deal.

If you are looking for a new air conditioner, department stores are generally the way to go. I have found many great deals in these types of stores. When you get to the home improvement stores, this is where the air conditioner starts to get a little more expensive. You can search the various stores online before you head out. This way, you will save yourself not only money on the air conditioner but you will save gasoline and you will also save a lot of time.

For those who are on more of a strict budget, there are always used air conditioners. If you are being careful with your purchase, a used air conditioner can save you an incredible amount of money. An air conditioner that would normally sell for over a hundred dollars in the store can generally be found used for around forty dollars. This is a tremendous savings.

When you old air conditioner breaks, you upgrade it, or you simply no longer want it, you might be confused as to what you can do with it. If it is absolute garbage, you can ask your local garbage collection agency to see what their rules and regulations are on taking air conditioners. Most will tell you that they will not take the unit unless the freon is removed from the unit because it is a toxin that they do not want in the landfill.

If the air conditioner is still in decent running shape, you might want to consider donating it to a thrift store or selling it. You can easily get a good twenty or thirty dollars for a used air conditioner. Just make sure that you clean it up a bit first and that you are ensuring that it runs before you give it away or sell it. You can list it online on a free ad site such as Craigslist.

There are even some people out there who like working on air conditioners or takes them to use for parts. If you know of someone near you that does this or you see someone advertising for this in the paper that is another route to consider. It would take the air conditioner off your hands and someone would get good use out of it, for whatever reason.

It seems that no matter how clean you keep your house, the window air conditioner will always get that nasty little film of mold and mildew. Apparently, this is something everyone experiences and I have yet to come across an air conditioner that did not do this. So what should a person do? Some people just let it go figuring that it will not cause any harm.

While a little bit of mold and mildew may not cause serious harm, to someone who is allergic, this can cause a lot of breathing problems. Moreover, having breathing problems is never a good thing.

Make sure that you are keeping the air conditioner as clean as possible. This may mean you have to clean it off every couple of days. The thing to do is to actually think of it as another piece of furniture. Every time you clean your living room furniture, you should also clean your air conditioner.

This includes wiping off the front, cleaning dust and debris out of the vent in the front, and thoroughly cleaning the filter. Do make sure that you completely dry off the filter before putting it back into the air conditioner because you are messing with electricity.

As long as you keep up on doing a little light cleaning on the air conditioner every few days, you should not have to worry about an unsightly and unhealthy buildup of mold and mildew. You will probably have the cleanest air conditioner in town and that is something that you can take pride in.

Whether you are thinking of purchasing a central air unit or a window air conditioner, it is important to make sure that you are putting in a little research to make sure that you are going with the correct size. Sure, if you are having a professional contractor install a central air unit, they can advise you what size you need. However, in order to ensure that you are indeed getting the right size and not being guided to purchase something too small or to large, you should really do a little research on your own.

I advise that you first find out what the square footage of the entire home is if you are going for the central air. For an individual air conditioner for the window, you are going to have to get the measurements of the room that it will be going into.

If you are installing four window units in four different rooms, you are going to have to get the measurements of each of the four rooms individually. This is because you do not want to purchase a unit that is too small as it will not properly cool the room and could cause damage to the air conditioner itself.

Once you have the measurements that you need, you will be able to make sure that you are purchasing the right air conditioner size. If for some reason a contractor tells you that you indeed need a different size, make sure that you are asking why. If you are not satisfied with the information that you receive, make sure that you are getting a second opinion. See what other air conditioner installers have to say.

Many people first start out with individual air conditioners and they find that these work well for them for many years. But as time moves on and the air conditioners start to break down and new ones need purchased, you may feel as though it is time to upgrade to a central air unit. Sure, it is going to cost you about three to five thousand dollars depending on the size of your home, but you will not have to worry about having to purchase window unit after window unit.

Some people are able to purchase and install the central air conditioner on their own. Most people need to have a professional come in to do the job in order to make sure that it is done properly. One thing that you can do to save yourself a little money is to pour your own cement slab. Take a look at other central air units; you will see that they all sit on a cement slab.

This keeps the unit level and out of the dirt. The professional installation service can do this for you but you would save yourself a nice chunk of change if you simply do it yourself. Just make sure that you are pouring a slab that is big enough for the air conditioner and you will be good to go.

Once you have your central air conditioner unit in, you will be able to remove all of the window units and enjoy the new view out your windows. While it can be a costly investment, it is not likely to be one that you are going to regret.

When the summer months start to appear, many people start thinking about vacations, summer pools and of course, the air conditioner. Even though there is the option to have central air, many people find that the individual window units are a better choice. For starters, you can purchase enough individual units for way less than purchasing and installing a central air unit.

In addition, with the individual units, each room can be controlled to be a certain temperature where as with the central air unit, the whole house will be one consistent temperature. While this may sound nice, not everyone always enjoys the same temperature.

One thing that can be a hassle with the individual air conditioner is that when the colder months arrive, the unit generally has to be removed from the window and stored somewhere. This is the best way to make sure that the cold winter air does not sneak its way into your home, raising the heating bill. You also have to make sure that you are always keeping the filter or screen clean in order to make sure that the unit continues to work as great as possible. The better care you take of your air conditioner, the longer it will last.

Just make sure that when you are buying a new unit that you are getting one that comes with a warranty. Even though the air conditioner is new, you just never know when something unexpected could break. With the warranty, you will be covered instead of having to spend another two hundred dollars on a new air conditioner.
