If you enjoy travelling, it is important to learn how to properly maintain your RV air conditioner – especially if you travel during the spring and summer months. There are a large number of steps that you can take to optimize the operation of your recreational vehicle’s cooling system. Not only will the air conditioner run more effectively, but if the system is properly maintained it will drastically reduce the amount of fuel or diesel that your RV requires while travelling. Performing the following steps will increase your comfort and the comfort of your family while travelling and also keep some extra cash in your pocket:

1.      The first step to properly maintaining your RV air conditioner is to learn as much as possible about the filter in the system. Many recreational vehicles implement the use of a filter that can be cleaned, reducing the need to purchase new filters. Then, there are other units that require filter replacement. It is important to know which type of filtering system that you have and follow the steps necessary to maintain it. If you have a system that incorporates a filter that can be cleaned, wash it on a regular basis. If you have a system that requires filter replacement, make an attempt to replace it at least once a month. If you travel in areas that are known to be “dusty” or contain high concentrations of air pollution, it is appropriate to change the filter at least twice a month.

2.      Your RV air conditioner has a condenser system. Within this system are small fin-like structures. Regular inspection is a must when maintaining your unit. The air of the system actually circulates through these structures so that your RV air conditioner can cool appropriately. Unfortunately, there are cases in which severe weather conditions such as heavy rain and hail can cause these to collapse. Trees with branches that hang low may also result in a collapse. If you find that the fin-like structures have been crushed in any way whatsoever, take the time to fix them. If it becomes too troublesome, you should consider purchasing a small grill that can be placed over the condenser to avoid damage to the fin-like structures.

3.      You should ensure that the electrical system in your vehicle has the appropriate level of power to operate the RV air conditioner that you have. If the amperage in the recreational vehicle is too low, there are many situations that may occur. First, the electronic controls that work to turn the air conditioner on and off may not work appropriately. Second, the RV air conditioner will have to work much harder which could result in a lower air output overall. Last, the unit could place a large burden on the electrical system in the entire RV. If this occurs, you may discover that components such as fuses, the alternator, the starter, and the battery do not work as appropriate. If you are travelling long distances, this can be a severe burden.

The RV air conditioner is designed to run from both a battery as well as a generator. It is typically designed to cool a large area – regardless of external temperature. If you fail to take the steps that are necessary to properly maintain the RV air conditioner, you will find that the climate within the vehicle is uncomfortable, you will pay more for fuel or diesel and it could result in mechanical malfunctions. If you follow the steps here, it is likely that your RV air conditioner will work appropriately – regardless of where you travel or how long you are gone!
